About the Program
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the founders of Black History Month, determine the theme of Black History Month every year. The theme is included in the official White House proclamation issued every February and used all the way down to the classroom level. Farmers Insurance is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the 2012 Black History theme which is “Black Women in American Culture and History.” And this year, Farmers is also proud to sponsor the Living Legacy Awards.

The Living Legacy Awards honor living African American women who are examples of courage and accomplishment. The awards will be launched during February – Black History Month – with celebrations around the country. Award recipients will be honored in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at the annual ASALH Black History Luncheon. Extraordinary African American from all walks of life will be presented with Living Legacy Awards at the luncheon and at other events throughout the month.

Nominate a Living Legacy in Your Community
The second campaign also begins in February with nominations and concludes with award presentations this fall. Farmers Insurance and ASALH believe the Living Legacy Award should not be just for household names. We also want to honor unsung African American women across the country that are doing extraordinary things in their communities. We are accepting local nominations for the Living Legacy Award between February 6 and June 1, 2012. Do you know a woman in your local community that deserves this award? If so, please click HERE to nominate your hometown Living Legacy.
